Regents' and New Century Scholarship Programs

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: All new and current New Century Scholarship participants must submit a new application or renewal by January 8, 2010.

The Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) administers two scholarship award programs:

Students who qualify for the Regents’ or New Century Scholarships may also qualify for additional financial aid opportunities such as the Academic Competitiveness Grant, by completing the FAFSA application.

Scholarships fully funded for 2009-2010 Academic Year (Fall 2009,Spring 2010)

Recently, USHE faced the possibility of scaled back scholarship awards because the number of qualified applicants increased at the same time that state budget shortfalls were cutting budgets throughout state government, including higher education.

USHE is pleased to report that the awards for both scholarship programs will be fully funded for students attending college Fall 2009 and Spring 2010. Current qualified scholarship recipients will be informed through letters.

Scholarship funding for Summer 2010 and thereafter unknown

The Legislature determines funding for the scholarships every year during their February-March legislative session.  In the past, scholarships have been fully funded, but state budget constraints mean funding is uncertain after the 2009-2010 academic year (Fall 2009 and Spring 2010).

More information will be available in mid April 2010, after state budgets are set by the Legislature. Currently, an estimated $3.5 million in additional funding will be necessary to fully fund both scholarship programs next academic year, which begins Summer 2010. Given the state’s budget shortfalls, USHE is working with the Governor and the Legislature to evaluate options for the future sustainability of this scholarship
