Engineering Education in Utah
Activities, Observations, Recommendations and Conclusions
June 2008
OVERVIEW
In fulfilling their responsibilities for the Utah System of Higher Education, the State Board of Regents has the sometimes-difficult task of serving competing interests—ensuring that educational opportunities are available to meet economic and workforce needs throughout Utah; and, at the same time, ensuring quality and avoiding unnecessary duplication, particularly of programs that are costly. A case in point--the need for more trained engineers is very compelling for the economy of Utah’s future, and yet, no undergraduate program offered within the Utah System of Higher Education is more costly. Therefore, careful planning is required as the Regents consider adding additional programs in this area.
Last year, proposals were advanced by Weber State University for a general engineering degree and by Utah Valley State College for a Computer Science Engineering degree. Former Commissioner Kendell recommended that before these proposals were considered, the Regents should commission a statewide engineering study. Based on recommendations from the University of Utah, Utah State University, and Weber State University, three nationally-recognized Deans of Engineering were invited to the state to meet with representatives of the higher education institutions, the business community, and other major employers.
