Snapshots

During each day of the 2001 Session of the Utah Legislature, the Utah System of Higher Education shared with legislators an interesting fact about the System, one of its institutions, or a student. These numbers have been updated as of June 26, 2005. Take a look below:

177,788 Utahns
That is the number of people directly impacted by Utah's public colleges and universities. That's 144,937 students, 4,194 full-time faculty, 2,259 part-time faculty, 1,411 teaching assistants, 24,987 staff (including the U of U Hospital). This doesn't even count the moms and dads, kids, relatives, etc., or hospital patients, employees of spin-off businesses or suppliers, patrons, alums.

You Think Your Heating Bill Is High
The 10 institutions that comprise the Utah System of Higher Education have a total of 25.6 million gross square feet of space in capital facilities, representing 66% of the entire space inventory of Utah State Government.

Third-Degree For 80 year-old dorm resident?
At eighty years old, Wanda Hewes is a student at Southern Utah University. She has previously earned a bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Utah, and is hoping someday to complete a third degree. For the past four years she's lived in a dorm, Juniper Hall. "To me the noise is like music to my ears. I like to be around young people. When I'm around people my own age, they're complaining about their illnesses and how bored they are with life. I tell them if you're having a boring life, you're a boring person."

United Nations University?
Utah State University has over 1,000 international students from 80 countries around the world.

Weber Delivers for Davis County
For Spring Semester 2004, Weber State University provided 208 courses with 3,322 enrollments at five sites in Davis County: Davis Applied Technology College, Northridge High School, Davis High School, Clearfield High School, and the WSU-Gordon Avenue Center.

Tax $ Down, Tuition $ Up
Constant dollar tax funds per full time equivalent (FTE) student in the Utah System of Higher Education have gone down 19% over the past 25 years, while constant dollar tuition per FTE student has gone up 80% over the same period.

Bye-Bye Rust, Hello Billion $
Research at the University of Utah Department of Metallurgical Engineering could result in preventing corrosion that costs U.S. industry more than $100 billion a year. The team of five Utah scientists was recently given the National Science Foundation's highest honor for junior faculty members.

One of the Fastest Growing
Utah Valley State College is the fastest growing institution in the Utah System of Higher Education. The number of students has increased by 72% in the last 10 years. During the past ten years, the number of FTE students has increased by 108%, while the number of faculty (regular, part-time and adjunct) has grown by 80%.

SUU Quarterback National Scholar Honoree
Southern Utah University Senior, Matt Cannon, was selected as a 2000 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame National Scholar Athlete, one of 16 in the nation to receive this recognition. Matt's stats include a 3.96 GPA, 4,373 career yards, 64 rushing touchdowns, and a record 1,553 rushing yards by a quarterback in a season (1998). Matt's a graduate of Highland High in Salt Lake City.

Bang for the Taxpayer's Buck
Every $1 of taxes appropriated by the Utah Legislature to the Utah System of Higher Education is matched by $3 from other sources (private dollars, federal grants, tuition, etc.)

One School, 83 Sites for Continuing Education
Utah State University provides 11,000 Utah adults access to Continuing Education through one of 62 sites statewide.

CTE is Big Part of Higher Education
For six of ten USHE institutions, Applied Technology Education (ATE) accounts for more than one-sixth of their total enrollment of students taking courses for college credit.

College of Eastern Utah 38%
Snow College 27%
Utah Valley State College 21%
Weber State University 19%
Dixie State College of Utah 16%
The percentage is even higher if non-credit courses are counted.

No Bones About It
The College of Eastern Utah's Prehistoric Museum is nationally accredited and world-renowned. It will celebrate its fortieth anniversary this year. A research and academic museum, it draws 50,000 visitors annually. - 2001

College Degree Before High School Diploma
Tony Mottes, a student at Weber State University, graduated with an Associate of Science Degree from WSU before he graduated from Roy High School by meeting degree requirements through WSU programs in Concurrent Enrollment, Early College, and AP/CLEP testing. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and plans to attend dental school.

Western Cooperation Pays Off
Thanks to Utah's participation with 14 other western states in the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE), dozens of qualified Utah students are guaranteed admission at home-state rates to professional schools in other states in the fields of Veterinary Medicine, Optometry, and Podiatry. Utah students are provided training in these specialized fields without Utah taxpayers bearing the full cost of these programs.

Research Grants Top $450 million
The faculty of Utah's two public research universities, the U of U and USU, were awarded $472 million in competitive grants for research this past year, surpassing the previous year's record of $427 million-an 11% increase. This further fuels Utah's economic engine.

CTE from A to Z (almost)
Utah colleges and universities offer more than a thousand Applied Technology Education (ATE) courses, serving more than 70,000 students, in categories ranging from Aero Technology, to Computer Aided Drafting and Design, to Local Area Network Technician, to Paralegal, to Radiologic Technology, to Visual Art and Design, to Welding.

Dixie State College: National Champs!
In double overtime, Dixie's Women's Soccer Team won the 2000 NJCAA National Championship. The score was 3-2. The team also won the sportsmanship award.

USU: Utah Space University
Utah State University employs 400 scientists, engineers, faculty, staff and students at its nationally known Space Dynamics Lab.

Thousands Learn On-line
Weber State's WSU Online had 5,000 enrollments in Internet courses. There are approximately 350 courses to choose from.

20,000 Tassles
Last year Utah's 10 public colleges and universities awarded 27,349 degrees and awards: 4,019 certificates, 8,249 associate degrees, 12,008 bachelors degrees, 2,595 masters degrees, 280 doctorates, and 260 professional degrees (MD or JD).

Largest Payroll
The Utah System of Higher Education, with a total of more than 28,000 employees statewide, is the largest employer in Utah, with an annual payroll of $780 million. Second place goes to the State of Utah with 22,000 employees and IHC with 22,000, followed by BYU at 17,000 and Hill Air Force Base with 11,000 employees.

Women Champs
Many Utahns recognize the caliber of the U of U's women's gymnastics team, with ten national championships-more than any other university in the country. The U's women's basketball team has bragging rights as well, having won their regular season conference title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament from 1996-98, and again in 2000.

UVSC Ethics Curriculum Receives High National Honor
Utah Valley State College received the 2001 TIAA-CREFF Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for its Ethics Across the Curriculum initiative. This prestigious award is given annually to the faculty development program in the nation judged to have particular significance to higher education and successful results and impact on undergraduate teaching and student learning.

LaVell & Company
What do John Warnock, co-founder of Adobe Systems; Alan Ashton, co-founder of WordPerfect; Alan Kay, father of the personal computer and developer of the Macintosh user interface; Jim Clark, founder of Silicon Graphics and Netscape; David Evans, co-founder of Evans & Sutherland; Tom Stockham, developer of digital technology that made CD, CD-ROM and DVD possible; and football coaching great LaVell Edwards all have in common? Each is a University of Utah alum.

One-fifth in 4-H
90,000 Utah teens a year-one in five-participate in Utah State University Extension's "4-H" program.

Reaching Out
The College of Eastern Utah is in Price. But it's also in Blanding, and Moab, Green River, Monument Valley, and Castle Dale---with centers in each. In fact, it reaches students throughout a 17,000 square mile area of Eastern Utah, an area the combined size of the states of Maryland, Delaware, and Rhode Island.

Tony Award Winner
The Utah Shakespearean Festival at Southern Utah University and its founder and executive producer Fred C. Adams have received many accolades since their first season in 1962. The Festival received the coveted Tony Award for "America's Outstanding Regional Theatre" last June.
Bravo!

Taking Care of Business
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Salt Lake Community College provided services to more than 7,500 Utah companies last year.

U of U and BYU Team-up
Erstwhile rivals U of U and BYU together administer the nation's only joint Center for International Business Education and Research.

Lifelong Learner
85-year-old Richard Swenson is Weber State University's oldest student. The retired automobile salesman has been taking classes on and off since 1980, usually one per semester. Music and English courses are his favorites. He first attended Weber in the 1930s, leaving to join the Civilian Conservation Corps. Now, it's not a degree he seeks, but the pleasure of learning and being among the "great minds" of his fellow students at Weber. "I'm convinced that activity, both mentally and physically, contributes to longevity more than anything else," he said. "I'm sold on that idea."
