USHE Admissions Standards

There are three levels of admission requirements among Utah's 10 public colleges and universities:

Level One. The University of Utah and Utah State University require you to take the courses listed below. Students who have not met the high school curriculum requirements, but who have an admission index of 90 (USU) or 97 (U of U) or higher (see next page) will be admitted on the condition that the deficiency is satisfied within the first 30 semester hours of study at the university. In addition to meeting the core course requirements, students must demonstrate minimum academic achievement in grade point average and college placement test scores. To be considered for admission, the University of Utah requires at least a 2.6 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, AND an ACT score of at least 18 (860 SAT), AND an Admission Index of 92. Utah State University requires a 2.5 grade point average, AND an ACT score of 19 (900 SAT), AND an Admission Index of 90. NOTE: Requirements are subject to change without notice.

SUBJECT # YEARS
English (emphasizing composition/literature) 4
Mathematics (select from elementary algebra, geometry, intermediate algebra, trigonometry, college or advanced algebra, or calculus. Students are strongly encouraged to take at least elementary algebra through trigonometry.) 3
Biological/Physical Science (three years, two of which are required to be taken from Human Biology, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. One of the sciences must include a laboratory experience.) 3
American History 1
Additional Courses (select from at least two groups: English, history, math beyond intermediate algebra, foreign language, lab science, social science, or fine arts) 4
Foreign Language (the same language, taken during grades 7-12; required only at the University of Utah) 2

Level Two. Weber State University and Southern Utah University have two-tiered admissions policies: university and college tiers. Students who wish to complete a baccalaureate or masters degree program must apply under the university admission process. Students are strongly recommended to complete the courses listed above. Students must also demonstrate minimum academic achievement in grade point average and college placement test scores. Weber students with a Math ACT of at least 23 AND an English ACT of at least 17 will be admitted to the university tier. Southern Utah students with a Math ACT of at least 18 AND an English ACT of at least 17 AND an Admissions Index of at least 80 will be admitted to the university tier.

Level Three. Snow College, Dixie State College of Utah, College of Eastern Utah, Utah Valley State College, Salt Lake Community College, Utah College of Applied Technology, and Weber State University and Southern Utah University (college tier admission)* will accept students consistent with the availability of institutional funding and classes. In addition, students must take the ACT, SAT or a placement exam; the results are used for placement and are not used for denial of admission.

*Students who wish to complete a one-year or associate degree program at either Weber State University or Southern Utah University may apply under the college tier admission process. Weber students with a Math ACT of less than 23 OR an English ACT of less than 17 AND an Admissions Index of at least 85 will be admitted to the college tier. Once admitted, a student must complete specific English and math classes with 20 total credits with a C grade or better to move to the university tier. Southern Utah students with a Math ACT of less than 18 OR an English ACT of less than 17 AND an Admissions Index of at least 80 will be admitted to the college tier. Once admitted to the Southern Utah college tier, a student must complete 16 specific General Education credits with a C grade or better within the first three semesters to move to the university tier.
