ST. GEORGE, UTAH - The State Board of Regents approved new tuition rates for the 2009-2010 academic year. The average total tuition increase is 7% or $391 in annual tuition for 15 credit hours for two semesters. The attached table has tuition increases by each institution.
“Our presidents remain committed to keeping our colleges and universities as affordable as possible despite the budget cuts and increased enrollment,” observed Jed Pitcher, Chair of the Board of Regents. “While it would have required an increase as high as 42% in tuition to make up for the state’s budget reductions, these proposed increases strike a good balance in meeting the increased demand for services while trimming back to meet our budgetary obligations.”
Tuition is approved in two tiers. The first tier is a system-wide increase of 1% for student financial aid and other critical needs at the campuses. The second tier is proposed by each institution separately through Boards of Trustees and approved by the Board of Regents.
“With our ongoing base budget cut at 17.5% it would have taken a tuition increase of over 40% to make up that loss in funding. These increases are less than one-fourth of that amount.” remarked William Sederburg, Commissioner. “We appreciate the hard work of institution presidents in managing resources in such tight circumstances.”
“Maintaining a quality student experience has been our top priority in this process,” said Ann Millner, President of Weber State University, “Unfortunately in this economic environment we have had to approach these budget cuts in some innovative ways.”
With the exception of Utah State University, institutions will also increase annual general student fees by 7% on average, or $39. Utah State University proposed a fee increase of 25%, or $157.50, primarily to support athletics and libraries.
